What it’s about..
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
I was a huge fan of Caraval, and was even more stoked when Maddie @munchreviews asked me to buddy read with her! I have never done a buddy read before, so it was nice we both went into this blind and turned out to be a wonderful experience!!
What I loved..
-This story picks up from where Caraval left off, except it is told through Tella’s eyes. I had a love/hate for Scarlett in the last book, so it was refreshing to have Tella lead the story.
- I actually enjoyed Tella’s character more than I did Scarlett. She was sassy, strong and adventurous.
-We learn more about Paloma, her real name and her disappearance. Tella has to once again, give something up in exchange for Aiko’s knowledge of her mother.
-Dante and the Prince of Hearts! OMG..totally gush worthy. We get to know more about Dante and see the softer side of him. The Prince of Hearts on the other hand, was intriguing and brutal, but very seductive.
-We also learn who the real Legend is! Which is the moment and reveal I was waiting for!
Which only leads to:
What I didn’t love..
Maddie and I both agreed that the magical world of Caraval fizzles out in this book. It didn’t have that same oomph!
The story gets kinda slow after chapter 17..picks back up for a little, but mostly leaves you feeling underwhelmed at the end.
Overall, it’s still worth the read if you want to find out who Legend is and why Paloma left Trisda.
What did you think? Have you read it?
